Activissime : Children Protest Workshop, Thessaloniki
This video shows us images from a protest workshop made with children from a primary school in Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2015. The workshop was developed by the artist as part of a commission for the 5th Thessaloniki Biennale, and is part of a series of protest workshops with children that Argote has been doing since 2011 in collaboration with museums, art centers and schools. The images are accompanied by a Greek speaker female voice, which is telling, in first person, different and mixed memories that actually come from different people who have participated in these workshops, and also, some memories of the artist’s father and the artist himself. This mix of memories creates a ubiquitous story that travels from Colombia, to France, Spain and Greece, crossing the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. The Activissime series of workshops started back in 2011, when museum MAC/VAL (Paris) invited Argote to develop some workshops for 6 years old children. By these days the artist was doing research about his parent’s revolutionary past and found an old photography where his father was doing protest with children about working class issues. Inspired by that, Argote decided to organize protest workshops in the museum, this time, making the children to generate their own protest slogans.
