How to Move a Monument on a Tuesday Morning proposes a whimsical entry point into the recurring theme of historic monuments within Argote’s work. The exhibition’s title introduces levity into topics often weighed down by conflict, trauma, and cultural dispute. The notion that monument removal is a simple act that could take place on an ordinary weekday lightens the weight of the historic past, and gestures to an unencumbered approach to uprooting entrenched narratives.

The exhibition brings together works across video installation, sculpture, and bas-relief that challenge the certainty of the past. The three-channel video installation Levitate (2022) considers the removal of colonial monuments in Rome, Madrid, and Paris, contending with the unresolved legacies they continue to anchor in civic plazas and public space. The figure of Christopher Columbus––a familiar subject in Argote’s work––appears here as a newly produced sculpture from his Wild Flowers series, which reappropriates national monuments to ‘great men’ by transforming their historic physical forms into reimagined vessels for native plants. Argote’s Print series (2025-present) builds upon the artist’s text-based works, bridging painting and sculptural techniques
with concrete to open dialogs about authority, community, and collective agency. Together, the works in this exhibition invite the viewer to detach from expected narratives and to picture how stories shift when the weight of history is lifted, even momentarily.
